An Update on BelCAT
Three years ago, in partnership with the Strickland Global Leadership Institute and supported by a £3 million matching pledge from an American private philanthropist, we began developing the Belfast Centre for Arts and Technology (BelCAT). Many individuals and organisations across Northern Ireland offered guidance, thoughtful challenge, expertise, and encouragement throughout this process. We are sincerely grateful for that support.
After careful consideration, we have concluded that we will not be proceeding with BelCAT as planned. Economic pressures, constraints on public funding, and changes in philanthropic priorities mean that the Board has been unable to secure the matching resources required to move from development to delivery.
While this is not the hoped for outcome, the work undertaken has been substantial and valuable. BelCAT's case for support remains highly relevant, particularly as more than a quarter of Northern Ireland's working-age population continues to face barriers to sustained employment. It can be found here.
The members of the BelCAT Board remain committed to working collaboratively to advance inclusive economic opportunity across Northern Ireland.
